For women with hereditary thinning hair, minoxidil 2% lotion and minoxidil 5% foam work almost equally well. The big difference is in the use: 2% lotion is applied twice a day, 5% foam only once a day. In a study among 322 women, the number of hairs increased almost equally after 24 weeks with both treatments.[1] For most women, 5% foam is therefore the easiest choice, while 2% remains a good option if you have sensitive skin or want to be as gentle as possible.

What is the difference between minoxidil 2% and 5% for women?
The percentage indicates how much minoxidil is in the product. Minoxidil is intended for women for hereditary thinning hair: hair that gradually becomes thinner on the crown and along the parting, while the hairline at the front usually remains standing.
- Minoxidil 2% (lotion or foam): twice a day. The classic form for women, in use for decades.
- Minoxidil 5% foam for women: 1 gram, half a cap, once a day. According to the product information of Regaine, it is intended for women aged 18 to 65.[2]
A higher concentration that you apply less often therefore amounts to approximately the same amount of active substance per day. The difference is mainly practical: once a day fits more easily into a busy routine.
What does research say about 2% and 5% minoxidil in women?
The most important comparison is a study by Blume-Peytavi and colleagues (Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, 2016). In this study, 322 women with hereditary thinning hair used either 5% foam once a day or 2% lotion twice a day.[1]
| Treatment | How often | Extra hairs per cm² after 24 weeks |
|---|---|---|
| 5% foam | 1 time per day day | +23,9 |
| 2% lotion | 2 times a day | +24,2 |
The result was very close, with half the number of applications for the foam. To be fair, the researchers were unable to prove statistically that the foam is at least as good, because the spread in the results was too large. Both treatments were well tolerated.[1]

What side effects does minoxidil have for women?
Most side effects are on the skin and are mild:
- Itching, redness or flakes on the scalp. More often with lotion, because it usually contains propylene glycol. Foam does not contain that.[3]
- Unwanted hair growth on the face, for example on the cheeks or forehead. This is often reported in women.[3] You can prevent a lot by applying carefully, washing your hands and letting the product dry before lying down. This usually disappears after stopping.
- Temporarily more hair loss in the first weeks, usually between weeks 2 and 6.[3] This is called shedding. Read more in minoxidil shedding: why you lose more hair first.
Do not use minoxidil if you are pregnant or want to become pregnant.[5] Stop and contact your doctor if you experience dizziness, palpitations, chest pain or swollen hands and feet.[3]
How much does minoxidil cost for women per month?
If used once a day, a bottle of 5% foam will last longer than a bottle of lotion used twice a day. These are the prices at Minodeals:
| Product | Package | Price | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kirkland Foam 5% Women | 3 bottles, 6 months | €99,99 | €16,67 |
| Kirkland Foam 5% Women | 1 bottle, 2 months | €39,99 | €20,00 |
| Foligain Lotion 2% Women | 3 months | €64,99 | €21,66 |
| Regaine Foam 5% Women | 4 months | €99,99 | €25,00 |

Minoxidil 2% or 5%: which one suits you?
- Choose 5% foam if you want to keep it simple: once a day, quick drying, no propylene glycol and the lowest price per month.
- Choose 2% lotion or foam if you have sensitive skin, have ever had unwanted hair growth on your face, or prefer to start with a lower concentration.
- Are you already using 2% and you are fine? good? Then there is no reason to switch. If applying twice a day does not suit you, then 5% foam is a logical step.

What should you check first?
Thinning hair in women does not always have a hereditary cause. An iron deficiency, a thyroid problem, hormonal changes after pregnancy or menopause, stress and some medications can also cause hair loss. Minoxidil does not help with this or helps less well.
Therefore, first visit your doctor if your hair falls out suddenly or in spots, if you also have other complaints, or if the loss started after childbirth or a major event. Do you not yet recognize the signals properly? Then read early signs of hair loss in men and women.
Frequently asked questions
Can women use minoxidil 5%?
Yes, as a foam specifically intended for women, once a day.[2] 5% lotion for men is not intended for women.
How long does it take before does minoxidil work for women?
Expect about 4 months of daily use before you can properly assess the results.[5] You may temporarily lose more hair in the first few weeks.
Will minoxidil give me hair on my face?
That is possible. It usually disappears after stopping. Applying carefully and washing your hands helps a lot.
Can I use minoxidil while breastfeeding?
Consult with your doctor first. Minoxidil passes into breast milk and several leaflets advise against use during breastfeeding.[4][3]
Should I continue to use minoxidil?
Yes. If you stop, the new hair will disappear again within a few months.[4]
