Regaine foam 5% for women is a minoxidil foam that you apply once a day: half a cap (1 gram) on a dry scalp, where your hair is thinning. It is intended for women aged 18 to 65 with hereditary hair loss, the thinning around the parting that occurs gradually.[1] Count on 12 to 24 weeks of daily use before you see anything, and stop if you do not notice any improvement after 24 weeks.[1] The biggest advantage over lotion 2% is the convenience: once a day instead of 2 times, without a pipette. In research, the foam gave approximately the same hair growth as 2% lotion 2 times a day.[2] Below you can read who it is suitable for, how you use it, what you can expect per week and what it costs per month.

What is Regaine foam 5% for women?
It is a foam with 5% minoxidil (50 mg per gram) in a 60 gram spray can. In the UK it is called Regaine for Women Once a Day Scalp Foam. The difference with regular Regaine foam is not in the formula but in the use: women use it once a day, men twice a day.[1][4]
That distinction is important. The Dutch leaflet of the Regaine foam for men literally says that the product is not intended for women.[4] If you want to use foam as a woman, choose the version for women and follow the leaflet that comes with it.
A few features at a glance:
| Feature | Regaine foam 5% for women |
|---|---|
| Active substance | Minoxidil 5% (50 mg per gram)[1] |
| Dosage | 1 gram (half a cap), once a day, maximum 1 gram per day[1] |
| For whom | Women aged 18 to 65 with hereditary hair loss[1] |
| Propylene glycol | No, it is not in the list of excipients[1] |
| Alcohol | Yes, ethanol (can sting eyes or irritate skin)[1] |
| Packaging | 60 gram aerosol with propellant, extremely flammable[1][4] |
The fact that it does not contain propylene glycol is a reason for some women to choose foam. This substance is found in many lotions and is often mentioned as a cause of itching and flakes. You can read more about this in minoxidil 2% or 5% for women.

2 aerosols for 4 months, without pipette and without propylene glycol.
Who is it suitable for, and who is it not?
Regaine foam for women is made for one type of hair loss: hereditary hair loss, where the hair slowly thins, especially on top and around the parting. The package leaflet mentions clear situations in which you should not use it:[1]

- You are younger than 18 or older than 65 years.
- You are pregnant, want to become pregnant or are breastfeeding. Minoxidil enters breast milk.
- You have high blood pressure, treated or untreated.
- Your scalp is red, inflamed, sunburned, affected by psoriasis or shaved.
- Your hair loss was sudden, occurs in patches, started after childbirth or has no clear cause.
Do you have a heart condition or abnormality? heart rhythm, consult your doctor first.[1] And in case of sudden or spot hair loss, the doctor is always the first step. There may be causes behind this, such as a thyroid problem, iron deficiency or alopecia areata. You cannot solve this problem with minoxidil.
How do you use Regaine foam once a day?
It is simple to use, and that is exactly why many women choose foam.[1][4]

- Make sure hair and scalp are dry. Allow to dry thoroughly after showering.
- Spray half a capful foam. That is 1 gram.
- Spread it over the entire thin area. Part your hair in a few places and massage the foam with your fingertips on the scalp, not on the hair.
- Do this once a day, every day. More than 1 gram per day does not help faster and gives more chance of side effects.
Apply the foam before styling products and keep the aerosol away from fire, do not smoke even immediately after application.[4] Wash your hands afterwards so that you do not transfer minoxidil to your face or to anyone else. The package leaflet reports unwanted hair growth in babies who accidentally came into contact with the product.[1]
Does 1 use of foam work as well as 2 uses of lotion?
About yes, but not proven equivalent. In a randomized study with 322 women, half received 5% foam once a day and the other half received 2% lotion twice a day.[2] After 24 weeks, the number of hairs per cm² had increased by 23.9 in the foam group and 24.2 in the lotion group. That is almost the same, but the researchers could not statistically demonstrate that the foam is at least as good: the preset limit was just not achieved. Both treatments were well tolerated.[2]
In another study, the foam was compared with a foam without minoxidil. After 24 weeks the increase was 13.4 hairs per cm² with minoxidil compared to 4.3 without.[1] The foam therefore demonstrably does more than nothing. Apotheek.nl indicates that minoxidil reduces hair loss in about half of women.[3] So there is also a large group for whom it has little effect.
Do you prefer to use a lotion, or have you already had good experiences with 2%? Then lotion 2 times a day is a great choice.

The classic 2% lotion with pipette, for 2 times a day.
When will you see result?
Patience is the most important thing. This is what a realistic timeline looks like:
Temporarily more hair loss is possible. According to the British leaflet, stop and consult your doctor if the extra loss lasts longer than 2 weeks.[1] Read also why you can lose more hair first.
In the study, the number of hairs had already increased (16.2 per cm² with minoxidil compared to 5.3 without). You often see little in the mirror.[1]
The evaluation moment. If you see no improvement, stop.[1] Take photos from day 1 in the same light, so you can make an honest comparison.
The maximum effect is achieved after about a year. If you stop, the new hair will be gone within 3 to 4 months.[3]
What side effects can you expect?
The most common side effect is headache. Also common are itching, rash, inflamed skin and unwanted hair growth outside the scalp, for example on the face.[1] You reduce the risk by not using more than 1 gram, washing your hands and not letting the foam run on your forehead or temples.
Stop immediately and contact a doctor if you experience chest pain, a fast heartbeat, dizziness or fainting, sudden weight gain, swollen hands or feet, or persistent redness of the scalp.[1] Never swallow the product and keep it out of the reach of children: ingestion can have serious effects on the heart.[1]
Regaine foam or another product for women?
At Minodeals you as a woman can choose from foam and lotion, in 2% and 5%. These are the differences, with the price per month for the smallest package:
| Product | Strength and shape | How often | Price per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regaine Foam 5% women | 5% foam | 1 time per day[1] | approx. €25.00 (€99.99 for 4 months) |
| Kirkland Foam 5% women | 5% foam | According to packaging | approx. €20.00 (€39.99 for 2 months) |
| Regaine Lotion 2% women | 2% lotion with pipette | 2 times a day | approx. €30.00 (€89.99 for 3 months) |
| Foligain Foam 2% women | 2% foam | According to packaging | approx. €25.00 (€74.99 for 3 months) |

If you want the same type of foam at a lower price per month, Kirkland foam 5% for women is the cheapest, and with a larger package (3 bottles for 6 months, €99.99) you drop to approximately €16.67 per month. Follow the dosage on the packaging and in the leaflet for each product.

Also 5% minoxidil foam, from 1 bottle for 2 months.
Frequently asked questions
As a woman, can I use the regular Regaine foam for men?
No, use the female version. The Dutch leaflet of the men's foam says that it is not intended for women, and men use it twice a day. The foam for women has its own leaflet with 1 gram once a day.
How long does 1 spray can last?
One spray can contains 60 grams. At 1 gram per day it will last you about 2 months. That is why the 4-month package contains 2 aerosol cans.
Can I use Regaine foam if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
The package leaflet does not recommend use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist first.
Can I dye my hair if I use Regaine foam?
Yes, but rinse the foam completely before dyeing or perming your hair, and do not use it on an irritated scalp.
What happens if I stop?
The effect is not permanent. After stopping, the new hair will fall out again in about 3 to 4 months and you will be back to your pre-treatment level.
