Minoxidil shedding: why you lose more hair first and how long it lasts

Minoxidil shedding is temporary extra hair loss in the first weeks of your treatment, usually between week 2 and week 6.[1] It is a well-known reaction: minoxidil pushes out hair that was already about to fall out faster, to make way for new growth. So it is not a sign that the drug is not working. Just keep using it daily, because stopping turns the clock back. In this article you can read why shedding happens, how long it takes and when you should sound the alarm.

What is minoxidil shedding?

Shedding is the English word for shedding or molting. With minoxidil we mean that in the first few weeks you see more hairs in your brush, on your pillow or in the shower than normal. It is stated in the official product information of minoxidil: some users notice increased hair loss at the beginning of treatment, usually 2 to 6 weeks after starting. This is most likely caused by the effect of minoxidil on hair turnover.[1]

Not everyone is affected by it, and in some people it is much more obvious than in others.

Why do you first lose more hair due to minoxidil?

Every hair goes through a fixed cycle:

  • Growth phase: hair grows, for scalp hair for several years.
  • Transitional phase: growth stops, a few weeks.
  • Rest phase: the hair remains loose in the hair follicle for about 3 months and then falls out.

With hereditary hair loss, the growth phase becomes shorter and the hair becomes thinner. Minoxidil prolongs the growth phase and puts hair follicles to work earlier in the resting phase. As a result, new hair pushes out the old, loose hair faster. Hair that would otherwise have fallen out over a few months now falls out over a few weeks at the same time.

So you would have lost those hairs anyway. The new hair behind it now has a longer growth phase.

How long does minoxidil shedding last?

For most people, shedding starts in weeks 2 to 6 and then decreases again.[2] The timeline usually looks like this:

Period What happens
Week 1 to 2 Usually nothing noticeable yet.
Week 2 to 6 More failure: the shedding. Old hairs in the resting phase fall out faster.
Week 6 to 12 The loss decreases. Sometimes the first fine baby hairs appear.
Month 4 and beyond The moment to assess your results.[3]

Please note that these are averages. For some people it takes a little shorter or longer.

"Great effects, shedding does indeed occur, but shortly afterwards new baby hairs grow back. I now finally see new white baby hairs appear, which have become increasingly bald over the past 5 years."

What do you do during minoxidil shedding?

  1. Continue to use minoxidil. If you stop, the new growth will disappear again within a few months[4] and start again later, including a new one shedding.
  2. Do not apply more than the dosage. More minoxidil does not make the shedding shorter, but it does increase the risk of side effects.
  3. Treat your hair gently. Use a mild shampoo, comb carefully and avoid tight ponytails or hot straighteners.
  4. Take photos. Photograph your crown and hairline in the same light every 2 to 4 weeks. Then you see the real trend, and not just the hair in the drain.
  5. Plan ahead. Make sure you don't run out of product halfway through. A 3 or 6 month package prevents an interruption exactly in the period it counts.

When is extra hair loss no longer shedding?

Shedding should be temporary. Contact your doctor if:

  • the additional loss does not decrease after about 6 weeks;[2]
  • you develop bald spots or the hair falls out in spots;
  • your scalp hurts, is inflamed or continues to itch;
  • your hair falls out suddenly and all over your head, regardless of when you started taking minoxidil;
  • you become dizzy, experience palpitations or chest pain, or swelling of your hands or feet. Then stop immediately.[2]

Hair loss can also have other causes, such as stress, an iron deficiency or a thyroid problem. You can read more about this in causes of hair loss.

Frequently asked questions

Does shedding mean minoxidil is working?

It's a sign that your hair cycle is responding, but not a guarantee of results. You can judge whether minoxidil works for you after about 4 months.[3]

Does everyone get shedding from minoxidil?

No. Some users don't notice it at all. No shedding does not mean that the drug does not work.

Should I stop taking minoxidil during shedding?

No. If you stop now, you will lose the new growth that is emerging. Only stop if you experience symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations or an inflamed scalp, and then consult your doctor.

Will I get shedding again if I switch brands?

If you switch brands within the same concentration and continue to apply daily, nothing will change for your hair cycle. An interruption of several weeks can trigger a new round.

How much hair loss per day is normal?

Everyone loses dozens of hairs every day, often 50 to 100. During shedding this can temporarily be more.

Hold on, without risk

Use minoxidil for 120 days as recommended. If you don't see results, you'll get your money back.
