Minoxidil can make a thin or fluffy beard fuller, but it requires patience: count on at least 3 to 4 months of daily use. In a randomized study from 2016, men who applied minoxidil to their chin and jawline twice a day for 16 weeks experienced significantly more beard hair than men with a placebo.[1] Minoxidil is officially intended for the scalp, so use on your face is at your own responsibility. In this article you can read in 6 steps how to approach it, what you can expect and what to pay attention to.

Does minoxidil work for beard growth?
There is one randomized, placebo-controlled study of minoxidil on the beard. Thai researchers (Ingprasert and colleagues, Journal of Dermatology, 2016) had 48 men apply minoxidil 3% or a placebo to their chin and jawline twice a day for 16 weeks. Doctors judged the beards in the minoxidil group to be clearly fuller in photos, and the men themselves also saw more of a difference. The number of hairs increased by an average of 5 per measurement area, compared to hardly any change in the placebo group.[1]
Minoxidil works on your beard in the same way as on your head: it extends the growth phase and can cause thin, light downy hairs to grow into stronger hair. It does not produce new hair follicles. If there is nothing at all in one spot, the chance of results there is smaller than in places where there is already some down.
What do you need?
- Minoxidil 5% lotion with pipette. Lotion is useful for your beard, because you dose exactly on the empty spots.
- A mild facial cleanser.
- A moisturizing, perfume-free cream for dry skin.
- Optional: a dermastamp, for those who want to go a step further (see step 6).
Six bottles with pipette. Enough for a complete beard treatment, for about €18 per month.
How to use minoxidil for your beard in 6 steps?
Step 1: Wash and dry your face
Apply minoxidil to clean, completely dry skin. Wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat it dry. On wet skin, the lotion dilutes and drains from the places where you need it.
Step 2: Dispense the lotion
Use a maximum of 1 ml for your entire beard area at a time. For most men, half to a full pipette is enough. Do you also use minoxidil on your head? Then keep the total per day within the dosage on the leaflet, and do not apply extra because you are treating two areas.
Step 3: Apply and massage
Drop the lotion on your fingertips or directly on the skin and massage it into the chin, jawline, cheeks and mustache, where you want more hair. Stay away from your eyes, lips and nose. Then wash your hands.
Step 4: Leave it on for at least 4 hours
Let the lotion absorb before washing your face, exercising or sweating. Many men apply it in the morning after showering and in the evening for a few hours before going to sleep. This means less lotion ends up on your pillow.
Step 5: Repeat twice a day
Consistency determines the result. Skip as few days as possible. For dry skin, apply a perfume-free cream in the evening after the minoxidil has been absorbed.
Step 6: Optional, use a dermastamp
A dermastamp makes tiny holes in the skin and is often combined with minoxidil. Use it no more than once a week, with short needles, and do not apply minoxidil on that day: wait at least 24 hours. Your body absorbs more minoxidil on damaged skin, and you don't want that.[4] You can read more about this in derma roller with minoxidil.
Adjustable needle length, useful for working precisely on empty spots in your beard.
How long does it take does minoxidil on your beard work?
Beard hair grows slowly, and minoxidil needs time to change the growth cycle. Roughly speaking, it looks like this:
| Period | What you may notice |
|---|---|
| Week 1 to 4 | Getting used to the routine, sometimes dry or flaky skin. |
| Month 2 to 3 | First fine, light hairs in areas that were previously bald laymen. |
| Month 4 | The moment to judge honestly. In the study, the difference was clear after 16 weeks. |
| Month 6 and beyond | Hairs can become darker and thicker, the beard looks more even. |
Take a photo every month in the same light. Beard growth is so gradual that you can hardly see it in the mirror.
"As you can see in my photo, I barely had any beard growth at first. Here and there you could see some stray hairs. On the advice of a friend, I ordered Kirkland through Minodeals and believe it or not, I achieved this result in 3 months."
Results vary per person.
What mistakes do men most often make with minoxidil on their beard?
- Stop too early. After 4 to 6 weeks you usually see nothing. Give it at least 4 months.
- Apply too much. More than 1 ml at a time does not work faster, but it does increase the risk of irritation and side effects.
- Skipping days. Twice a day is the goal. If that doesn't work, stick to at least one fixed moment.
- Apply immediately after derma stamping. Wait at least 24 hours.
- Suddenly stop. Little research has been done on how new beard hairs react when you stop. Many men therefore gradually reduce their use instead of stopping all at once.

Is minoxidil on your face safe?
Minoxidil is approved for the scalp, not the face. The skin on your face is thinner, so pay close attention to how you react. Known side effects include irritation, dry skin and rash.[2] Avoid bright sun and tanning beds on the treated skin.[2] Stop and consult your doctor if you experience dizziness, palpitations, chest pain, swollen hands or feet or unexplained weight gain.[3]
Do not use minoxidil if you are younger than 18.[3] and consult your doctor first if you have heart or blood pressure problems or are taking blood pressure medication. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
Test how your skin reacts before starting a full treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Does minoxidil work on a completely bald chin?
Less well. Minoxidil causes existing hairs to grow out, but does not produce new hair follicles. The more down there is already, the greater the chance of visible results.
Foam or lotion for the beard?
Both is possible. Lotion is more popular because you can dose precisely with the pipette. Foam is better if lotion makes your skin itchy. Read more in minoxidil foam or lotion.
Will my beard remain if I stop taking minoxidil?
That has not yet been properly researched. Some men keep some of their new hair, for others they disappear again. Those who stop, therefore usually gradually reduce their use.
From what age can I use minoxidil?
From the age of 18.[3] Beard growth is often still developing before the age of 18.
Can I use minoxidil on my head and beard at the same time?
Yes, but keep in mind the total amount per day within the dosage stated in the package leaflet. So do not use two full doses at the same time.
