Minoxidil foam and minoxidil lotion work equally well: both contain 5% minoxidil and extend the growth phase of your hair. The difference is in how your scalp reacts to it and how easily you use it every day. Lotion usually contains propylene glycol, foam does not. This makes foam the better choice for a sensitive scalp or if you have little time, while lotion is cheaper and can be dosed more precisely. Below you can read the 5 differences that determine which form suits you.

Does minoxidil foam work as well as lotion?
Yes. The active substance and concentration are the same: 5% minoxidil. Whether you apply it as a foam or as a liquid makes no difference to the effect on your hair follicles. What does matter is that you keep it up every day. Therefore, choose the form that fits most easily into your routine.
These are the differences in brief:
| Feature | Lotion | Foam |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | 5% minoxidil | 5% minoxidil |
| Propylene glycol | Usually yes | No |
| Drying time | Longer, can stick | Short, feels light |
| Dosage | 1 ml, 2 times a day | Half cap, 2 times a day |
| Apply | Pipette, very precise | With your fingers |
| Kirkland, monthly (6 months) | €18,33 | €22,50 |
| Best for | Lowest price, long hair, beard | Sensitive scalp, morning |
1. What excipients are in minoxidil foam and lotion?
Minoxidil does not simply dissolve in water. Lotions therefore use alcohol and usually also propylene glycol.[2] That combination helps the minoxidil penetrate the scalp, but it's also what people react to most often. Itching, redness, flaking and dry scalp are listed in the leaflet as common side effects.[2]
Foam does not use propylene glycol. The Dutch package leaflet for minoxidil foam lists alcohol, water and glycerol as excipients.[3] If you notice itching or flakes that do not go away with lotion, switching to foam is usually the first step.
Try foam for a month first. Dries quickly and is gentler for sensitive scalps.
2. How quickly does minoxidil foam and lotion dry?
Foam melts on your scalp and dries within a few minutes. Your hair will hardly feel any different afterwards, so you can also use it in the morning before work and then simply style it afterwards.
Lotion needs more time to be absorbed. Users often notice that their hair looks a bit sticky or greasy when it is wet. That's why many people apply lotion at night, a few hours before bed, and lather in the morning.
3. How do you dose and apply minoxidil foam and lotion?
You apply both twice a day to a dry scalp:

- Lotion: 1 ml each time. With the pipette you can drip the lotion directly onto the thin spots, even if you have longer hair. Then massage it lightly.
- Foam: half a capful (about 1 gram) at a time, no more than 2 grams per day.[3] Spray the foam onto cool fingers, part your hair and massage it into the scalp.
Never use more than indicated. More minoxidil does not work faster, but it does increase the risk of side effects. Wash your hands after applying.
If you have long or thick hair, lotion is often easier, because the pipette reaches the scalp through the hair. Foam works well for short hair or a bald crown. Do you use minoxidil for your beard? Then many men choose lotion, because it allows you to dose exactly on the empty spots.
The most affordable way to start using minoxidil. Useful for longer hair or for your beard.
4. How much does minoxidil foam and lotion cost per month?
Lotion is slightly cheaper than foam from each brand. At Kirkland you pay approximately €18.33 per month for lotion and €22.50 for foam for the 6-month pack. Over a year, that's a difference of about €50.
That difference is small compared to what it costs if you stop because your scalp itches or you don't like sticking. Therefore, start with the form that suits you best and then choose the most affordable package. Would you also like to see the brands side by side? 5. What shape is there for women?
For women, foam is often the most convenient shape. There is minoxidil 5% foam for women that you only apply once a day , with 1 gram (half a cap).[4] That is easier to maintain than a lotion that has to be applied twice a day. There is also minoxidil 2% lotion for women, which you use twice a day.
Unwanted hair growth on the face is a known side effect in women if minoxidil ends up outside the scalp.[3] Therefore, apply it carefully, then wash your hands and let it dry before lying down. Do not use minoxidil during pregnancy.[1]

Which form suits you: foam or lotion?

- Choose lotion if you want the lowest price per month, have longer or thick hair, or minoxidil for your beard used.
- Choose foam if your scalp is prone to itching or flaking, if you use it in the morning, or if you hate sticky hair.
- Combine if you want both benefits: foam in the morning, lotion in the evening. Make sure you stick to the dosage each time.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch between foam and lotion?
Yes. The active substance is the same, so you can switch without losing your results. Your scalp sometimes needs to get used to the other additives.
Can I combine foam and lotion in one day?
Yes, as long as you do not exceed the total per day. For example, use half a cap of foam in the morning and 1 ml of lotion in the evening.
Why does minoxidil lotion make my scalp itchy?
Mostly due to the propylene glycol or alcohol in the lotion.[2] Foam does not contain propylene glycol and is therefore often better to tolerate. If the itching persists, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Can I apply minoxidil to wet hair?
No, the leaflets recommend a dry scalp.[2][3] On a wet scalp, the product dilutes and drains more easily from the areas where you need it.
How long after application can I wash my hair?
Let minoxidil sit for at least 4 hours before washing your hair or going swimming. This way it has enough time to do its work.
