Viviscal Pro: does it work against thinning hair? 5 facts about ingredients, studies and results

Viviscal Pro is a dietary supplement in tablet form with the marine complex AminoMar, biotin, vitamin C and apple extract. Does it work? In a few small, manufacturer-funded studies, women with temporarily thinning hair grew more thick (terminal) hair after 90 to 180 days than the placebo group.[1][2] So the evidence is promising but limited. Viviscal Pro is especially suitable for temporarily thinning hair due to stress, nutrition or another phase of life. Minoxidil on the scalp has been better studied in the case of hereditary baldness. Expect 3 to 6 months of daily use before you can judge anything. Below you can read what is in it, what the studies really show and for whom it is and is not useful.

What's in Viviscal Pro?

At the heart of every Viviscal product is AminoMar, a proprietary blend of marine protein. In the studies it is described as powder from shark and molluscs.[1] The Pro version also contains biotin, vitamin C (from acerola and as ascorbic acid), apple extract (procyanidin B2) and the amino acids L-cystine and L-methionine.[3] You take two tablets daily: one in the morning and one in the evening, after a meal with a glass water.

Ingredient What is it? Side note
AminoMar marine complex Marine protein from shark and molluscs Proprietary formula, only tested by the manufacturer
Biotin Vitamin B8 Especially helps with a deficiency, which rarely occurs[5]
Vitamin C From acerola and ascorbic acid Supports, among other things, the absorption of iron[4]
Apple extract Procyanidin B2 Little independent research in hair
L-cystine and L-methionine Sulfur-containing amino acids Building blocks of protein, also from normal food

Important: Viviscal Pro contains fish and shellfish.[3] If you have an allergy to them, this supplement is not suitable.

Does Viviscal Pro really work? What do the studies say?

There are two published, randomized and double-blind studies with placebo that are often cited. Both were carried out on women with experienced thinning hair and both were paid for by Lifes2good, the maker of Viviscal.[1][2] Please note: previous variants (Maximum Strength and Extra Strength) were used, not with exactly the current Pro formula.

Study Participants Duration Result
Ablon, 2012[1] 15 women (10 supplement, 5 placebo) 180 days Terminal hairs on 4 cm² from an average of 271 to approximately 610; placebo remained the same
Ablon, 2015[2] 60 women (30 supplement, 30 placebo) 90 days Terminal hair from 178 to 236 and less shedding when washing; hair thickness did not change

Those figures sound strong, but there are clear caveats. The groups were small, the research came from the manufacturer and only women participated for whom the thinning was probably temporary. The independent hair site Perfect Hair Health also points out that some of the Viviscal studies have never appeared in a magazine and concludes that the product can be especially useful for hair loss due to diet or deficiencies.[4] The Belgian consumer organization Test-Aankoop states in September 2026 that so far no nutritional supplement has been proven effective in stopping or reversing hair loss.[5]

Honest conclusion: there are more about Viviscal studies have been published on many other hair supplements,[4] but the evidence is not as strong as with minoxidil and there are no guarantees of hair growth.

Who is Viviscal Pro suitable for and who not?

Based on the studies, Viviscal Pro is best suited to people who experience temporary thinning hair, for example after a stressful period, a one-sided diet or in a different phase of life. It is also an option for those who are looking for a supplement in addition to a treatment on the scalp.

Viviscal Pro is less suitable or not suitable if:

  • you are allergic to fish or shellfish;[3]
  • you have clear inlets or a thinner crown due to hereditary baldness: then minoxidil has been better researched;
  • you suddenly develop bald spots or lose much more hair than before. normal.

Everyone loses 100 to 120 hairs per day. If you are losing significantly more, you suddenly develop bald spots or you are concerned, make an appointment with your doctor.[6] Causes such as an iron deficiency, a thyroid problem or alopecia areata should be discussed with your doctor first, not with a supplement. How long should you use Viviscal Pro?

Hair grows slowly, so a supplement takes time. The advice for Viviscal Pro is to use it consistently for 3 to 6 months. This is what the timeline looked like in the studies:

Day 1

Start with 2 tablets per day, divided between morning and evening, after food. Take a photo of your hair in good light so you can make an honest comparison later.

Day 90

In the 2015 study, women in the supplement group had more terminal hair after 90 days and less shedding when washing than at the start.[2]

Day 180

In the small 2012 study, the number of terminal hairs up to day 180.[1] If you see no difference after 6 months, there is little point in continuing.

Results differ per person. If you stop taking the supplement, the support disappears again.

Viviscal Pro or minoxidil: which suits you?

Viviscal Pro and minoxidil work in a completely different way. A supplement provides nutrients through your diet. Minoxidil is applied directly to the scalp and inhibits hair loss; some of the users are growing hair again. According to Apotheek.nl, you only notice the effect from 4 months onwards, the maximum effect is reached after about a year and it works best in men under 40 with limited hair loss.[7]
