Stopping minoxidil: what will happen to your hair within 3 to 4 months?

Stopping minoxidil is possible without tapering off and without after-effects. What you need to know: new hair growth also stops. About 3 to 4 months after your last application, your hair will usually be back to where it was before you started, and then hereditary hair loss will continue at its own pace.[1][3] Minoxidil only works as long as you use it. In this blog you can read exactly what happens when you stop, when stopping is a good idea and when it is better to continue.

In this article

What happens to your hair when you stop taking minoxidil?

Minoxidil inhibits hair loss and can occur in some users after a few promote hair growth for months.[1] It does not address the cause of hereditary hair loss. As soon as you stop, the stimulation on the hair follicles disappears. Thuisarts.nl puts it briefly: if you stop applying the cream, the balding process will continue.[2]

In concrete terms, this means:

  • The hairs that have started to grow thanks to minoxidil will fall out again in the following months.[3]
  • You will approximately return to the point where you would have been without minoxidil.
  • Side effects such as unwanted hair growth. arms, legs or face disappear again when you stop.[1]

Good to know: stopping will not make your hair loss worse than it would have been without minoxidil. You "only" lose the profit you had built up with the drug.

Timeline of what happens when you stop taking minoxidil: stop day 1, then new growth stops, return to normal after 3 to 4 months starting point

How quickly do you lose the results after stopping?

The Dutch information is unambiguous: after about 3 to 4 months, baldness returns to the level before the treatment.[1][3] An American study among men who had used minoxidil 2% or 5% for 96 weeks came to a similar picture: 24 weeks after stopping, hair weight and hair number had returned approximately at the level of the placebo group.[4]

Day 1

You stop applying the cream. You don't have to reduce anything and you won't notice any difference in the beginning.[1]

The following weeks

The extra growth stops. Hair that has grown thanks to minoxidil may start to fall out again.[3]

Months 3 to 4

Your scalp is usually back to the way it was before you started.[1][3] In research, this was the case after about 24 weeks.[4]

After that

Hereditary hair loss continues at its own pace, just like without minoxidil.[2]

How quickly it becomes visible to you varies per person. Anyone who has applied for a long time and had a lot of results often sees the loss more clearly than someone for whom minoxidil had little effect.

Do you have to reduce minoxidil?

No. According to Apotheek.nl, you can just stop without any after-effects.[1] There is no research that shows that slowly reducing hair loss prevents or postpones hair loss after stopping.

What is often asked: can you go to once a day instead of twice? The leaflet advises twice a day, and more than that is of no use.[3] Little is known about applying less often as a permanent approach. If you want to reduce, do not expect a guarantee that you will keep the same result, and if in doubt, consult your pharmacist.

When is it wise to stop taking minoxidil?

There are good reasons to stop. Put them side by side before you decide:

Situation Advice Source
No effect after 6 months Further use is then not useful. Discuss with your doctor whether there are other options. Apotheek.nl, Thuisarts.nl[1][2]
Pregnant, breastfeeding or desire to have children Do not use during pregnancy or if you want to become pregnant. Sources differ about breastfeeding: the package leaflet advises against it, Apotheek.nl calls it safe. Consult with your doctor. Bijsluiter, Apotheek.nl[1][3]
Cardiovascular disease Minoxidil can make this worse. Only use it in consultation with your doctor. Apotheek.nl, Thuisarts.nl[1][2]
Swelling of the face, lips, throat, hands or feet Stop immediately and contact a doctor immediately. Package leaflet[3]
Itching, dry or irritated scalp Contact your doctor or pharmacist if this bothers you. Thuisarts.nl[2]

Minoxidil is not intended for people under 18.[3] Does your hair fall out suddenly, in spots or very quickly? Then it is probably not hereditary hair loss and the doctor is the first step, not minoxidil.

Why do many people stop too early?

The most common reason for stopping is impatience or fear in the first weeks. That's a shame, because then you can't say anything about the result. The effect is only noticeable from about 4 months of use, and the maximum effect is achieved after a year.[1] Thuisarts.nl recommends that you only discuss with your doctor whether it works after 6 months.[2]

In addition, you may temporarily lose more hair in the first weeks. This is called shedding and is mentioned in the sources as a very rare side effect.[1] Read in our blog about minoxidil shedding why that happens and how long it lasts. And if you want to know what you can expect per month, take a look at the timeline of minoxidil results.

Checklist to stop or continue minoxidil: good reasons to stop versus reasons to continue first

Are you unsure whether it works? Take pictures of your crown and hairline in the same light at the start, and repeat this every month. This way you can compare more fairly than with the mirror.

Can you start using minoxidil again later?

Yes. You can always start over, but you will then be starting from scratch. You will again need a number of months before you see an effect, and there is also a chance of temporary additional failure in the first weeks. Taking breaks is therefore usually not a smart strategy: you always lose the accumulated profit.

For example, did you forget to apply sunscreen for a few days? No problem. According to the leaflet, you don't have to worry if you miss it once or twice. Do not apply double the amount, but simply continue with your normal schedule.[3]

If you use minoxidil because it works for you, then the honest story is: lasting effect requires daily use.[1] An affordable larger packaging helps to keep it full.

Frequently asked questions

Will my hair loss get worse if I stop taking minoxidil?

No worse than without minoxidil. You lose the hair that has grown thanks to the product and return to your old level after about 3 to 4 months. Afterwards, hereditary hair loss continues at its own pace.

Should I gradually reduce minoxidil?

No, you can stop at once without any after-effects. There is no evidence that tapering off prevents hair loss after stopping.

How long after stopping will I notice my hair thinning?

The extra growth stops quite quickly. After about 3 to 4 months, your scalp is usually back to how it was before the start. In research, this was the case after about 24 weeks.

Will my beard remain if I stop taking minoxidil?

There is little research into this. Don't assume that the extra beard growth will last. Here too, the following applies: lasting effect cannot be expected without continuous use.

Is it wise to stop after 2 months without results?

That is usually too early. The effect is only noticeable from approximately 4 months. Only if you see no effect after 6 months is it pointless to continue using it.

Would you rather not stop, but continue at a cost-effective rate?

Choose a supply for several months and maintain your routine.
