You do not need a special shampoo with minoxidil. A mild shampoo that is gentle on your scalp is enough, and that is also what the minoxidil leaflets recommend.[1][3] The moment you wash is more important than the brand of shampoo: wash your hair before applying, let the hair and scalp become completely dry and wait at least 4 hours after application before your scalp gets wet again.[1][2] If you have dandruff, itching or flakes, you can use an anti-dandruff shampoo in addition with ketoconazole, such as Nizoral.

Which shampoo do you use with minoxidil?
Mention the package leaflets of minoxidil no brand or special formula. They only ask for a gentle shampoo: the Regaine 2% leaflet says it is best to wash your hair with a gentle shampoo before applying, and the 5% minoxidil foam leaflet recommends a shampoo that is gentle on your scalp.[1][3] A mild shampoo cleanses without additionally irritating your scalp. This is useful, because minoxidil itself can cause dryness, itching or flaking in some people.
Which shampoo is best depends mainly on your scalp:

| Type of shampoo | When do you choose this? | How often? | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild shampoo | Regular or sensitive scalp, as a base for every wash | As often as you want | This is what the leaflets recommend[1] |
| Anti-dandruff shampoo with ketoconazole | Dandruff, itching, greasy flakes or seborrheic eczema | Leave on for 3 to 5 minutes about 2 times a week[4] | Not on a broken or inflamed scalp[6] |
| Anti-dandruff shampoo with selenium sulfide or zinc pyrithion | Light dandruff | According to the label | According to the dermatologists of the NVDV, this often works well for dandruff[5] |
| Caffeine shampoo | As an additional, not as a replacement for minoxidil | According to the label | The evidence is still weak: 9 small studies, most of them low quality[8] |
When can you wash your hair after minoxidil?
Wait at least 4 hours after application before wetting your hair or scalp again. This is literally stated in the leaflet of Regaine 2%, and the leaflet of a 5% minoxidil foam says the same: do not wash the hair for 4 hours after application and do not wet the scalp for about 4 hours.[1][2] This gives minoxidil time to penetrate your scalp before you rinse it away.

If you use minoxidil twice a day, as the leaflet indicates for men at 5% foam (women once a day), a fixed schedule often works easiest.[2] This is what a wash day looks like, for example:
Wash your hair with a mild shampoo. If you use an anti-dandruff shampoo, leave it on for 3 to 5 minutes and rinse thoroughly.[4]
Dry your hair and scalp completely with a towel or hairdryer. Only apply minoxidil to a dry scalp.[1]
Apply the lotion or foam to the areas of hair loss and then wash your hands. You should only use styling products after minoxidil.[3]
Keep the scalp dry: do not wash, do not exercise until your head is wet with sweat and do not swim.[2]
Second dose (only if the leaflet of your product indicates twice a day) on a dry scalp, and leave it well withdraw it before you go to sleep.

Do you have to wash your hair before applying minoxidil?
No, you don't have to do that with every dose. The leaflet of a 5% minoxidil foam literally says that it is not necessary to wash the hair before use.[2] If you want to wash, do so before application and never after. The most important thing is that your hair and scalp are completely dry when you apply minoxidil.[1]
Are you going to dye or perm your hair? Then make sure that all minoxidil has been washed from your hair and scalp before using those chemicals.[3]
Does a ketoconazole shampoo such as Nizoral help in addition to minoxidil?
A ketoconazole shampoo can help with dandruff or seborrheic eczema. A yeast that lives on everyone's scalp (Malassezia) plays an important role in this, and ketoconazole kills fungi and yeasts.[5][4] According to Apotheek.nl, wash your hair at least twice a week with ketoconazole, let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes and only use conditioner after you have rinsed it thoroughly. Itching and flaking usually diminish after a few washes; Complete healing can take up to 4 weeks.[4]
Does ketoconazole also help against hair loss? There is very little research into this. An old 1998 study on hereditary hair loss found that a 2% ketoconazole shampoo improved hair density about as much as 2% minoxidil with a regular shampoo. The researchers themselves wrote that this must first be confirmed in a larger group.[7] So see ketoconazole primarily as an aid for a calm scalp, not as a replacement for minoxidil. In our article about ketoconazole shampoo for hair loss you can read more about 1% or 2% and about dandruff.
Nizoral 1% is an anti-dandruff shampoo with ketoconazole. The US label states: use it every 3 to 4 days for up to 8 weeks, and then only as needed. Stop and ask a doctor for advice if a rash develops or if it does not get better after 2 to 4 weeks.[6]

How often do you wash your hair when you use minoxidil?
There is no fixed rule for this in the package leaflets. So you can wash your hair as often as you are used to, as long as you respect the 4 hours after application. However, after a few days, residues of minoxidil may remain on your hair and scalp. The London hair clinic Belgravia Center therefore recommends washing more than once a week, often every other day for most hair types; for frizzy hair, about once a week may be enough.[9]
If you also use an anti-dandruff shampoo, alternate it with your mild shampoo: for example ketoconazole twice a week and your regular shampoo on the other days.[4]

You spread the foam over a dry scalp with your fingertips and it dries quickly.
What mistakes are you easy to make with shampoo and minoxidil?
- Shower or swim within 4 hours. Then rinse away minoxidil before it is withdrawn.[1]
- Apply minoxidil to wet hair. Hair and scalp must be dry.[1][2]
- Conditioner immediately after ketoconazole. Rinse the ketoconazole shampoo well first, otherwise it will be less effective.[4]
- Continue with an anti-dandruff shampoo on an irritated scalp. Do not use it on a broken or inflamed scalp and stop if a rash occurs.[6]
- Expect shampoo to replace minoxidil. Shampoo helps keep your scalp clean and calm; for caffeine and ketoconazole shampoo, the evidence against hair loss is still limited.[7][8]
Does your scalp continue to itch, burn, turn red or flake despite a mild shampoo? Then stop taking minoxidil and consult your doctor or pharmacist. Even in case of sudden or localized hair loss, you should first consult your doctor.
Always read the package leaflet before use. Minoxidil is not intended for people under the age of 18 and not for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have heart disease or problems with your blood pressure, consult your doctor or pharmacist first.[3] Results vary per person and are never guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
Can I swim or exercise after applying minoxidil?
Wait at least 4 hours. During that time, your scalp should not get wet, including from swimming water or a lot of sweat.[1][2]
Can I use conditioner, gel or wax with minoxidil?
Yes. First apply minoxidil to a dry scalp and then use your styling products as usual.[3] Use conditioner while washing, so before applying.
Do I have to use a sulfate-free shampoo with minoxidil?
That is not mandatory. The leaflets only ask for a mild shampoo that is gentle on your scalp.[1][3] If you have a sensitive or dry scalp, a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo may feel more pleasant.
Can I use Nizoral every day?
I'd rather not. The label of Nizoral 1% says every 3 to 4 days, up to 8 weeks, and then only if necessary.[6] On the other days, use your regular mild shampoo.
